Vetements x Balenciaga intrigue

Could this be another controversy in the fashion industry? Over the years we have been able to follow a series of accusations of plagiarism that exposed the harsh reality behind the scenes of the business, but what if the two pieces were created by the same person? This is the case of the intrigue generated between Vetements and Balenciaga.

First of all, it is necessary to remember the career of the brand designer. Vetements was created in 2014 by Demna Gvasalia, who brought bold designs, perfect for street style. Just a year later he took another step and became the new designer for Balenciaga and, after reconciling the two companies for a long time, Gvasalia announced in September 2019 that he would move away from the French brand to focus only on the Spanish one.

Everything could be a smooth transition, mainly because Demna's brother, Guram Gvasalia, has remained the CEO of Vetements since its creation. However, this week the French brand published a photo with two very similar shirts, as a clear accusation of plagiarism. But ... is copying yourself plagiarism?

In the first image we see a black shirt launched by Vetements in 2019, for the spring / summer 2020 collection. In its design, a black label written “Hello! My name is Capitalism”. The second, launched by Balenciaga this year, has long sleeves and a very similar label, written “Hello! My name is Demna”.

In the caption, a simple “WTF” was enough to translate the company's feeling for another brand's piece. What do you think? Was this just a brotherly intrigue or a serious accusation to be followed?
