Lisa Opie: Future is calling
Lisa Opie: "I believe AI will continue to shape the future of fashion and beauty by expanding the boundaries of creativity, allowing us to express ourselves in unique ways and making the creative process even more exciting."
Lisa, almost all the photos here are completely AI generated. Tell us more about the concept. How do you think AI will shape the future of fashion and beauty?
Almost all of my photos here are completely AI generated. For these images, we had no photographer, set, clothes, accessories, hair and makeup, backgrounds, etc. AI is revolutionizing the way we enhance and present our photos, and now we can see how AI could replace photo shoots entirely. It offers incredible opportunities to experiment with different styles, filters, backgrounds, props, wardrobe and effects, allowing us to create truly captivating and innovative visuals. I believe AI will continue to shape the future of fashion and beauty by expanding the boundaries of creativity, allowing us to express ourselves in unique ways and making the creative process even more exciting. I'm especially excited to see how AI can help promote sustainability in clothing, props and design in the fashion space, as we produced zero waste to create the cover.
How would you describe your job? What is your trademark?
As for my work, I would describe it as a mix of chic elegance and vibrant energy. My trademark is always pink, as many of you know, but it also lies in my ability to effortlessly combine classic styles with modern trends, creating a distinctive aesthetic that resonates with my audience. As a former victim of harassment and racism for being half-Japanese, I strive to inspire women to show their individuality and feel confident in their own skin.
We're sure you have countless, but what are your favorite moments in your career?
I have been lucky enough to experience so many amazing moments. From attending major events to collaborating with talented designers and brands, doing celebrity makeup, building an award-winning hair and makeup team, every opportunity has been a dream come true. My favorite moments, however, are those spent connecting with my community. The interactions with my audience, whether through meetings, hair and makeup clients, or social media engagement, are incredibly rewarding and remind me why I do what I do.
You have a lot of followers on social networks, how do you feel your influence and responsibility?
Having a significant following on social media is a privilege that I do not take lightly. I use my influence to empower and encourage others. I strive to create a positive and inclusive space where people feel inspired and supported. Through my content, I share beauty and fashion tips, inspire confidence, and give voice to causes close to my heart. It is important to me that my influence goes beyond the purely aesthetic and contributes to making a meaningful impact on people's lives.
How did you start your first business?
My first business venture, Vizcaya Swimwear, started when I couldn't afford a competition swimsuit for the Miss United States pageant. I ended up making my own swimsuit and was placed in the top 5. The following year, the national team contacted me and wanted me to sign a 3-year contract as the official swimsuit sponsor of Miss United States. It was a challenging but rewarding experience that taught me valuable lessons about entrepreneurship and the fashion industry. I am now the proud owner of several business ventures, including LadyCode Cosmetics, where I can explore my passion for makeup and beauty. Most recently, I partnered with Miss Earth USA to create mascara, donating a portion of our sales to Wands for Wildlife.
Which projects are closest to your heart right now?
Currently, the projects closest to my heart include advocating for sustainability and environmental awareness in the fashion and beauty industry. I believe we have a responsibility to promote green practices and support brands that prioritize ethical production. As the owner of several businesses, I make sure that we reduce as much waste as possible and use sustainable industrial practices. Additionally, by using AI-generated content, collaborating with sustainable fashion and beauty brands, I hope to inspire others to make conscious choices that benefit both the planet and themselves.
What are the challenges you face as a female business owner and what do you do to overcome them?
As a female business owner, I have faced incredible challenges. The industry can be competitive and sometimes male-dominated, but I believe in the power of persistence and self-belief. Surrounding myself with like-minded people was crucial. I also actively seek opportunities to collaborate and encourage other female entrepreneurs, creating a support network that fosters growth and success.
What's the one thing you do before starting the work day and why?
Before I start my work day, there is one thing I always do: I spend a few minutes in self-care and self-reflection. Whether it's practicing self-awareness, setting goals for the day, or enjoying a cup of tea, this ritual helps me focus, stay positive, and approach my work with clarity and focus.
What have you been watching/listening/reading lately that has inspired you?
I recently watched a documentary about female pioneers in the fashion industry and it really inspired me. Their stories of overcoming obstacles, challenging norms, redefining success, reminded me of the importance of staying true to yourself and persevering in the face of adversity. It reinforced my belief in the power of dedication and determination to create lasting impact. When I started my first business over 10 years ago, I didn't have access to these resources and I had no one to lean on. I hope to be that woman that young female entrepreneurs can look to for support, sharing advice and experience through my social networks.
When you're not working, what takes up most of your time?
When I'm not working, I like to spend time in nature. Skiing, hiking, and rock climbing are some of my favorite hobbies because they allow me to spend time outside and stay in shape.
What are your favorite travel destinations and why?
I spend a lot of time in the Middle East and really enjoy their lifestyle and culture. LadyCode cosmetics have retailers in Dubai so I travel there often. I also love skiing in Colorado in the winter.
What advice would you give to young girls dreaming of success?
If someone tells you that you can't do it, prove them wrong. People made fun of me when I first started Vizcaya Swimwear and scoffed at my venture, especially my closest friends at the time. Now Vizcaya swimwear is successful internationally because I never gave up and worked even harder to prove them wrong.
