On 9 February, the Zuzeum Art Centre opens its 2024 exhibition season with 2 exhibitions - "Where to Hide!" and " I Exist in Colours ".

Exhibition I Exist in Colours

From 9 February to 28 April 2024, an exhibition of Rūdolfs Pinnis' works, titled I Exist in Colours, will be on show in the Small Exhibition Hall of the Zuzeum Art Centre. With this exhibition, the art centre inaugurates a new exhibition concept where the Small Exhibition Hall is used as an independent art space &ndash; a white cube that lets visitors take a more in-depth look at the oeuvre of a particular artist.
The exhibition will present 30 works from the Zuzāns Collection, which were created over the period from 1936 up to 1990, and provide an insight into different periods of Rūdolfs Pinnis' creative career. The exhibition is curated by Dace Lamberga and designed by Reinis Liepiņ&scaron; and architecture studio Silver Architecture.

Dace Lamberga, curator of the exhibition, writes: &ldquo;Rūdolfs Pinnis (1902&ndash;1992), one of the most vivid personalities in Latvian painting of the 20th century, has always fascinated with the temperamental colourfulness of his work, his tireless one-hundred-per-cent dedication to the creative goal. The Zuzāns Collection exhibition I Exist in Colours gives contemporary viewers the opportunity to discover the master's daringly diverse endeavours over the period of more than 50 years. His landscapes of the 1960s fascinate with their stylised depiction of nature's forms and their resonant colour scheme, uncharacteristic for the Latvian art of the time. The master's appeal resides in the contrasts of unusual colour combinations, with his broad brushstrokes creating his very own versions of &ldquo;colour duels&rdquo;. When in 1972, an opportunity arose for Rūdolfs Pinnis to visit, after long years, the city of his youth, Paris, his painting became more emotionally imaginative and formally complex.&rdquo;
It is worth noting that Neputns Publishers will shortly release the twenty-seventh title in the series Classics of Latvian Art &ndash; Rūdolfs Pinnis, with text written by Dace Lamberga. The publication will also be on sale at the Zuzeum Art Centre.

Exhibition Where to Hide!
09.02.2024.&ndash;19.05.2024.

From 9 February to 19 May 2024, the exhibition Where to Hide! will be on show in the Great Exhibition Hall of the Zuzeum Art Centre. The exhibition is curated by Sandra Krastiņa and designed by Reinis Liepiņ&scaron; and Silver Architecture. The exhibition presents more than 350 works created by Latvian artists under Soviet occupation from the Zuzāns Collection, Latvian National Museum of Art and private collections as well as materials from the Latvian State Archive of Audiovisual Documents.
Where to Hide! &ndash; not a question but a scream of realisation in the face of Soviet reality appears in the spontaneous caption for a 1954 drawing by artist Roberts Stārosts. This text, with its grammatically uncorrected Latvian form, is a poignant indicator of the existential choices people had to make. This title underlines curator Sandra Krastiņa's intention to structure the exhibition around two points of reference &ndash; the set of themes co-opted by the authorities and the artists' endeavours in the language of free expression. These works, produced during the Soviet occupation from 1945 to 1990, are authentic witnesses to the dues paid to the powers that be as well as to the spirit of resistance and disobedience which the artists have succeeded in incorporating in their works, constructing a space freed from Soviet ideology. At the same time, the exhibition highlights the lack of the Contemporary Art Museum and permanent exhibitions showing the period of Soviet occupation.

How to represent an entire era within a single gallery? How to represent the power or powerlessness of the artist's personality to resist or collaborate with the occupying power within a single time frame? Architect Reinis Liepiņ&scaron; deals with these questions in his exhibition design. In order to trace in a nutshell the artistic heritage of almost fifty years, in this exhibition Sandra Krastiņa presents artefacts from different artistic disciplines: painting, graphic art, sculpture, graphic design, posters, photography, original and industrial design.
