The Art of the Hat: Stephen Jones at Palais Galliera
The Palais Galliera Museum in Paris presents a unique exhibition dedicated to one of the most influential headwear designers of our time - Stephen Jones. For the first time in more than forty years of the museum's existence, the exhibition is entirely devoted to the accessory, which in the hands of a master turns into a real work of art.
Stephen Jones is a legendary fashion designer whose creations have been worn by stars such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Kylie Jenner. Among his notable clients are members of the British royal family, including Kate Middleton. The first to call on his talent was Princess Diana, known for her famous red beret.
Jones' journey in the fashion world began in 1957 near Liverpool. An exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum inspired him to enroll at St. Martins School of Art, where he met John Galiano. After graduating in 1979, Jones opened his first London boutique and became part of the New Romantics subcultural movement, which originated at the iconic Blitz club in Covent Garden.
The designer's creative biography is filled with collaborations with fashion legends. Jean Paul Gaultier was the first to invite him to Paris, introducing him to the influential designers of the time. Jones worked with Thierry Mugler, Claude Montana, Azzedine Alaïa, Rei Kawakubo and Marc Jacobs. Especially fruitful was a long-standing collaboration with the house of Dior. Starting with the Princess Lucretia collection under John Galiano, it continued with Raf Simons, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Kim Jones. His work has been inspired by images ranging from Madame Butterfly to Elvis Presley.
The exhibition "Stephen Jones, Chapeaux d'Artiste” presents more than 400 exhibits, including 170 hats from the designer's personal archive. Visitors will see preparatory sketches, photographs, videos of shows and unique tools of the master. The exposition is divided into two parts: personal works of Stephen Jones Millinery brand and creations for fashion houses.
The exhibition will run until March 16, 2025.
